Quartet

It was generally agreed, in the group, that Quartet is a fun film to see. A score of 4-5, said most people. The setting is in a retirement home for professional musicians, just weeks before a concert which will be put on by the residents. The proceeds from the concert are earmarked for helping to offset the cost of upkeep for their lovely home in the country.

The supporting actors in the film are all professional musicians, and this provides authenticity to the notion these people are retired musicians. You know the actors are playing the instruments in the film. Further, the music in Quartet, becomes akin to another character. Music is not just background dressing, it takes on a dominant role in the story.

Losing one's abilities, with age, is always a concern. This theme is explored in a sensitive manner, and sometimes, in a humorous way. The prospect of performing enlivens all the residents of the retirement home in the film -- those mentally intact, and those dealing with the ebb and flow of dementia. And in one scene, one is reminded of how much the elderly can still offer the youth of their day.

We are encouraged to celebrate the gifts of those nearing the end of life, and remember that some day soon, it will be you and I.
